I went through almost a dozen fitness certification programs, countless hours spent going over online courses, reading books, studies, literally anything that I could get my hands on trying to figure out how to fix this problem. There had to be a way to train that actually helped the body long-term... didn't just make us stronger, but more efficient, safer, and move better as well. No one really had the answers, even though some people were getting close... I started to put pieces of the puzzle together...

The search paid off... I cracked the code and discovered a training method that worked too well.

Why "too well"? 

Well, because within a year of using it with clients, they were getting such good results, that word-of-mouth referrals filled my calendar with more clients than I could handle.

Not to mention, all my own aches and pains suddenly vanished for good, all while my athleticism, explosiveness, smoothness, running mechanics all "magically" improved as well.

It started by learning about what other fitness systems - including "functional" fitness systems- were getting outright wrong...

Most 'training' is actually just creating negative compensations in the body.

Trainers are trying to fit the human body with movements, lifts, and exercise when it should be the other way around. We should be training in a way that is optimized for how the body is built, and how the body is supposed to move

Barbell lifts, cable machines, cardio circuits, pretty much everything you see in a common gym forces our bodies to move in unnatural ways... and the more we do them, the more our bodies adapt to those movements, making our mechanics less efficient, less secure, and more susceptible to injury...

With One-of-a-Kind Fitness, I wanted to flip that on its head... I went out to discover how the human body was designed and developed to move naturally... and from there deduce the optimal way to train the attributes that support that movement.

So where do you start?
  • Figure out how the human body develops from infancy to adulthood
  • Figure out what our bodies' native functions are based on our development
  • Define the primary functions of joints as it relates to our native functions
  • Create movement patterns that support the native movements and relevant joint functions

The Movement Development of Humans

As a pre-requisite to walking. Building specific muscle firing patterns, such as lateral flexion of the spine, that will create safety and efficiency in your movements as you learn to stand and walk. Developing lateral stability in the hips and shoulders.

We utilize the patterns/attributes we learned in the crawl to pick up a hip, rotate our pelvis (counter rotating the thoracic) as we fall forward. Repeating this process until we adapt and learn to balance and move with each step. This challenges our Vestibular system and teaches us spacial awareness as we now move in all 3 planes at the same time.

Once we master these movements we start really utilizing the LPH rotation with thoracic counter rotation and the decoupled motion of the head. 

Sending rotational energy downward to provide safety of the limbs while now utilizing the elasticity of our fascia! The achilles’ tendon and the lumbo-dorsal fascia learning how to elastically propel the body forward as we rotate our spine keeping that rotational energy and muscle firing sequences.

This develops into the run as we decouple our head from those motions for stability to steady the line of sight. The arms help to amplify the shoulder counter rotation and the legs are utilized as whip-like springs that are rotated back and forth by the pelvis.

Stable hips that are being whipped back and forth by the pelvis/lumbar which is getting counter rotated by the thoracic with the arms and shoulders. Eccentrically and isometrically loading tissue that elastically recoils amplifying the patterns already being utilized.

WHAT'S ALL THIS MEAN FOR OUR TRAINING?!

Based on how we developed, we can determine what our joints were designed to do... and how we should train them from there.

The OKF Mobility-Stability Model was my unique take on joint behaviour as it relates to human biomechanics. It shows exactly where to emphasize joint stability training, and by deduction, what joints should be mobile as well!

The surprising part for most people is seeing that increasing stability in certain joints actually created a byproduct in mobility of the other joints - meaning you didn't have to spend hours on "mobility work" to increase your flexibility or range of motion!

When you train your body right, the right things happen, without having to go over-the-top and spend hours on neurotic stretching and mobility drills.
